THE AWARD OF POST-GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP BY - DR. FOLA AWOKOYA AT 4TH ANNUAL LECTURE OF THE STEPHEN OLUWOLE AWOKOYA FOUNDATION FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION 16TH MARCH, 1999

 

Mr. Chairman, Senator Dafinone The Special Guest of Honor, Dr. Allinson The Guest Speaker, Professor Ogunmola Members of the board of trustees Distinguished Ladies and gentlemen

It is my distinct honor and priviledge to present the Awardees of the Stephen Oluwole Awokoya Foundation For Science Education Postgraduate Scholarship.

Since the inauguration of the Foundation in 1995, The Stephen Oluwole Awokoya Foundation for Science Education has made a total of six postgraduate Scholarship awards.

Three scholarships were for Masters level courses, while another three were for doctoral level courses. All the awardees to date have had either first class or second class upper bachelor's degree.

The process for the award of the scholarship starts with the nominations of candidates from the Deans of the various faculties and heads of departments related to Science and Science Education at the tertiary institutions in Nigeria .

The Board of Trustees of the Stephen Oluwole Awokoya Foundation for Science Education deliberates over the nominations and then decides on the winners based on objective assessment, seeking excellence in educational performance and stated long term objectives of the candidates.

The postgraduate scholarship award covers tuition and board, and it is of the order of N=50,000 per student per annum.

It is renewable each year for a maximum of three years provided the awardees maintain a good record of performance as attested to by the authorities of the university he or she attends.

This year we had a significant number of highly qualified Applicants and the decision-making to choose the best two for the award was a lot tougher.

The two awardees for the this year are

MR. CHARLES CHINEDUM ONYENEKWE

AND

MR. LAWRENCE ADEREMI OLATUNJI

Mr. Onyenekwe was born on the 19th of October 1970. He attended the Christ Church Primary School , in Lagos and the Bishop Crowther Junior Seminary School in Awka, Anambra State for his secondary school education.

In his GCE exams, he took eight subjects and got eight distinctions.

He obtained his first degree in Chemical Pathology from the School of Medical Laboratory Technology at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital , Enugu .

He further holds a master's degree in Chemical Pathology from the College of Medicine of the University of Ibadan .

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Medical Laboratory Technology of Nigeria.

Mr. Onyenekwe will be pursuing a Ph.D program in Chemical Pathology at the College of Medicine , University of Ibadan .

The second awardee, Mr. Lawrence Aderemi Olatunji attended the University of Ilorin , where he studied Physiology at the Faculty of Health Sciences.

Mr. Olatunji was the best student in his class and the only candidate with a second class upper division degree.

His B.Sc. project was of such a high standard that a paper titled- "HAEMORHEOLOGIC CONSEQUENCES OF CONTRACEPTIVE USAGE" has been published from the project.

Mr. Olatunji will be undertaking a Master's level program in Physiology at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin .

Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to the rostrum the distinguished awardees of the 4th Annual Postgraduate Scholarship Award of the Stephen Oluwole Awokoya Foundation for Science Education, Mr. CHARLES CHINEDUM ONYENEKWE and Mr. LAWRENCE ADEREMI OLATUNJI.

On behalf of the Board of trustees of the Stephen Oluwole Awokoya Foundation For Science education, I hereby present to you the award of postgraduate scholarship along with your first check of N25,000 to cover the first half of your yearly stipend.

I wish you every success in your academic endeavours.
