THE AWARD OF POST-GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP BY - DR. FOLA AWOKOYA AT 7TH ANNUAL LECTURE OF THE STEPHEN OLUWOLE AWOKOYA FOUNDATION FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION - 12TH MARCH, 2002

Mr Chairman, Mr Hakeem Bello-Osagie The Special Guest of Honor, Honourable Minister of State of Finance Senator Jubril Martins-Kuye, ably represented by My Adeyemi, a Deputy Director Planning Research and Statistics Federal Ministry of Finance The Guest Speaker, Professor Sagay The Chairman and Members of the Board of Trustees Distinguished Ladies and gentlemen

It is my distinct honor and priviledge to present the Awardees of the Stephen Oluwole Awokoya Foundation For Science Education Postgraduate Scholarship.

Since the inauguration of the Foundation in 1995, The Stephen Oluwole Awokoya Foundation for Science Education has made a yearly award of postgraduate Scholarship for studies in the areas of science and science education.

To date the Foundation has made a total of Fourteen Postgraduate scholarship awards.

The course programs that the postgraduate scholarship awards have been used for have included Mathematics, Science, Special Education, Clinical Pharmacy,

Chemical Pathology, Medicine and Engineering.

The beneficiaries of these awards have attended varied institutions including The University of Ibadan, the Ahmadu Bello University , the University Of Lagos , the University of Nigeria-Nsukka , the University of Maiduguri , the University of Ilorin and the Obafemi Awolowo University .

The process for the award of the scholarship starts with the nomination of candidates by the deans of the various faculties (or heads of departments) related to science or science education at tertiary institutions in Nigeria .

The scholarship awardees are chosen based on excellence in educational performance, stated long-term objectives and an interview of the short-listed candidates by the Board of Trustees.

The postgraduate scholarship award covers tuition and board, and it has been increased this year to a value of One Hundred Thousand Naira (N=100,000) per student per annum.

It is renewable each year, for a maximum of three years, provided the awardee maintains a good record of academic performance as attested to by the authorities of the university he or she attends.

This year, the three postgraduate scholarship awardees are really the best in their respective classes.

First two of the awardees were the top two students in the Department of Chemical Engineering of the University of Lagos . The third awardee was the best in her graduating class at the faculty of Medical Science and Dentistry, College of Medicine , University of Nigeria , Enugu Campus.

The first awardee for the Postgraduate Scholarship of the Stephen Oluwole Awokoya Foundation for Science Education in the year 2001 is

Mr. Robert Tobochukwu Nwaokoro

Mr. Nwaokoro, please come up to the rostrum.

Mr. Nwaokoro is 25 years old and he attended the Okigwe National Secondary School in Umuna, Imo State . At the Okigwe National secondary School, he obtained Seven (7) distinctions in the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE).

He later attended the University of Lagos where he was one of the top two graduating students in the Department of Chemical Engineering, with a first class honours degree.

The second awardee is

Miss Ololade Tairat Osikoya.

Miss Osikoya, please come up to the rostrum.

Miss Osikoya is 22 years old. She attended Federal Government Girls College , Shagamu, Ogun State , where she obtained distinctions in all the nine subjects she took for her Senior School Certificate Examinations.

Miss Osikoya later attended the University of Lagos , Where she graduated in the top two of her class with a first class honours degree in Chemical Engineering.

The third awardee this year is

Dr. Chigolum Chidinma Umeonyido.

Dr. Umeonyido, please come up to the rostrum.

Dr. Umeonyido is 26years of age. She attended Trans Ekulu Girls Secondary School , Enugu , where she obtained Eight(8) distinctions in her Senior Secondary Certificate Examinations. From there she went to the Faculty of Medical Science and Dentistry, College of Medicine , University of Nigeria , Enugu Campus.

She graduated in the year 2000 with six distinctions in her various MBBS examinations, namely Anatomy, Medical Biochemistry, Physiology, Pharmacology, Pathology and Obstetric and Gynecology.

She was the best graduating student in Medicine in her class.

She had won several awards from her faculty and the University for her academic performance.

Ladies and gentlemen, please CONGRATULATE the distinguished awardees of the 7th Annual Postgraduate Scholarship Award of the Stephen Oluwole Awokoya Foundation for Science Education, MR. ROBERT NWAOKORO, MISS OLOLADE OSIKOYA AND DR. CHIGOLUM UMEONYIDO
